I’m currently cruising the Danube on a charming A-Rosa ship and conversation amongst my fellow travelers is all about Christmas holiday plans. Most popular? The Swiss Alps–more specifically, to St Moritz and its surrounding valleys.
I’ve yet to visit the Alps, but will now make it a top priority as I only hear good things. From the architecture to the food, a charm which apparently cannot not be replicated anywhere in North America’s ski resorts.
Having grown up far from snow, I’m not too keen on slaloming down the slopes (but incredibly fond of anything après ski!) and the Engadine valley offers some world-class social hot spots alongside the marvelous retreats. Suvretta House, a grand dame of a hotel that overlooks the valley to the southwest of St Mortiz, is actually celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Equipped with a glorious spa and direct access to the Corviglia ski area, the hotel is ideal for high-luxe pampering. Suvretta House also boasts two quaint little on-piste restaurants; the Trutz and Chammana mountain lodges. Sounds perfect for a long slope-side lunch. Am already dreaming of creamy Raclette, fragrant Bündnerfleisch and of course, yummy Rosti potatoes.
