There are star sightings, and then there’s star-gazing. Though the world is full of wonder, nothing quite compares to the mystery of what lies beyond. And that’s why astrotourism — or traveling to destinations with the best view of the cosmos — has become one of my absolute favorite pastimes.
Chile’s Elqui Domos hotel is any star-gazer’s dream realized. In addition to their state-of-the-art astronomic observatory, the dome-shaped accommodations are built specifically to facilitate observation of the absolutely breathtaking night sky.
One of the best iterations of this recent travel trend is housed in my favorite South African spot, the stunning Molori Safari Lodge in the Madikwe Game Reserve. Their on-site planetarium boasts one of the largest privately owned telescopes in southern Africa. Combine that with gorgeous outside-meets-in design and an incredibly warm and attentive staff and the result is an unforgettable night of gazing deeply into the sky.
Though cities aren’t the most practical observatories, places like Mount Tamalpais, a state park just outside of San Francisco, invite urban residents to explore the constellations, stars and planets that are visible from the mountain’s peak.
What’s more romantic than that?
