Seat 1A. The very thought of it makes me smile. It's my favorite seat – and the most coveted. First class flying was always a treat, but with recent developments in the uber-luxe sphere, fastening a seatbelt in 1A has never been fancier. My favorite first class is naturally Qantas – kangaroo PJs, please – but with airlines constantly rolling out new offerings (hello, Etihad Residence), flying first is like staying in a penthouse in the sky.
I've grown a bit addicted to reading about The Residence on Etihad flights; amenities alone make it worth the $40,000 (okay, sort of) it costs to fly from London to Abu Dhabi. The bag itself is a gorgeous little number evocative of the Emirati people, with sadou – centuries-old Abu Dhabi weaving style – stitching. First class fliers get Le Labo Bergamote 22 goodies, including a sizable hand lotion, facial moisturizer, towelette, and lip balm.
The new Mint class on JetBlue is a fabulous addition to the skies, with first class Birchbox amenities filled with fun sample-sized versions of some of the hottest products picked by top editors. I'm a huge fan of the Missoni sleep suits on Qatar – paired perfectly with the Frette linens in first class. Cathay Pacific offers Aesop toiletries with Ermenegildo Zegna for men and Trussardi bags for female fliers – I'll take one for me and one for…me as well.
