As I previously mentioned, smell and memory are inextricably linked, and in an effort to make an everlasting impression on guests it seems that hotels too are trying to seduce our noses. A trend prompted by the luxurious hotel spas of the Far East and the Hotel Costes in Paris (those trendy French again) has caught onto the big names and now everyone from Le Méridien to The Ritz-Carlton has been investing in a signature scent. Let me share a few lobby fragrances that will certainly have you swooning.

The astoundingly picturesque Le Sireneuse near Positano on the Amalfi Coast has an appropriately delicious perfume range called Eau d’Italie, and they make abundant use of their signature scent, also called Eau d’Italie, throughout the property. Light and citrusy with hints of bergamot, black currant and musk; it is Italian summer personified.

At Le Bristol in the French capital only a sniff of its namesake fragrance, which is available to purchase in the boutique in both room spray and candle form, will immediately transport you to the chicest of Parisian gardens; freshly cut grass intertwined with freesia, lily of the valley and my favorite, white rose.

The Langham Melbourne diffuses its signature juice sneakily through the air conditioning, ambushing unsuspecting guests with an intoxicating blend of ginger flower, lemongrass and tuberose and it’s available to take away as an essential oil or room spray.

A bit nearer to home, one of the most striking olfactory experiences must be the collaboration between the Gramercy Park Hotel in New York and the fabulous perfume company Le Labo. The custom made fragrance called Cade 26 is a seducing smoky wood and leather blend and was developed using the lobby’s grand fireplace as inspiration.

Two hotels close to my heart boast signature scents that are simply to die for — La Mamounia in Marrakech has a mystical fragrance wafting through the property, inspired by woody notes of Atlas cedar and the hotel’s verdant garden, created in collaboration with Olivia Giacobetti. The Setai, Miami Beach recently launched a new signature fragrance with Roja Dove, incorporating top notes of Florida’s famed neroli with intermingling whispers of precious Rose de Mai and Jasmine de Grasse, among other intoxicating scents.
