With London Fashion Week just wrapped and the Design Festival about to unfold, it's all happening now in the British capital. Of course the highlight of the month — certainly for those of us in the business of leisure, anyway — is the recent opening of the The London EDITION hotel. The man behind the marvel is Ian Schrager, who not since launching the famed Sanderson and St. Martins Lane hotels caused such a stir in the U.K. hospitality scene.
The property could not be more perfectly located — on the corner of two tranquil Fitzrovia streets, yet a millisecond from Oxford Circus and the very heart of London. Inside, grandiose public spaces seem to hail from another era, with a hint of the Gentlemen’s Club feel. In contrast, each of the 173 rooms is a sleek and cozy wood-clad haven.
Appropriately fabulous festivities marked the opening of the hotel last week, held in collaboration with W Magazine for the launch of Fashion Week, with a veritable who’s who of a guest list including Editor-in-Chief Stefano Tonchi, artist Damien Hirst, singer Ellie Goulding, boy-band crush Harry Styles and Brit model-of-the-moment Cara Delevingne — and Madame Kate Moss, of course.
Not as commercial as New York or as high-brow as Paris, London’s Fashion Week has been cultivating its young urban edginess successfully for years, and this season was no exception. Standout collections included the likes of Tom Ford with his signature rocker sex appeal as well as Peter Pilotto, who presented an extravaganza of blue-green prints and bold shapes. So while everyone now heads onto Milan and then Paris for the shows, at least we know the hot property to check into for London’s next Ready-to-Wear season.
Ciao for now.
