In case the world doesn’t stop spinning tomorrow as planned, I’ve dreamt up some first-rate trips to be enjoyed long after the Mayan calendar has run out. Funny enough, at the top of my list is a foray deep into the heart of that ancient culture that’s been on everyone’s lips lately.
Ka’ana, a breathtaking eco-luxury boutique resort in the Belizean jungle, has outdone itself once more, this time by crafting a once-in-a-lifetime excursion. The Yaxha Overnight Experience Package leaves no stone unturned — literally and figuratively. It starts with a short drive from the property just across the Guatemalan border and into the world of the past: the ruins of an ancient Mayan city, which you have all to yourself for the night.
As if the prospect of a sleepover in one of the cradles of civilization isn’t tempting enough, Ka’ana has managed to pack two of my favorite travel trends into one package: luxury camping (or “extravaglamping”) and bespoke adventure travel. Once you arrive at the centuries-old city just before nightfall, you’re led to the base of the ruins, where a delicious meal is prepared for you by a local Maya cook. Following dinner, with an expert archeologist as your guide, you hike up to the highest temple in the ruins. Upon bedtime, cramped tents be gone — Ka’ana has you covered, providing not only a luxury tent that is a replica of the rooms back at the hotel (king-sized bed and all) but also, a personal butler.
The next morning, following yoga and coffee, you can venture across Lake Yaxha by boat to visit another, as yet unexcavated Mayan ruins site. How very Indiana Jones.
