Cliff-Side in Dominica
As evidenced by The Travel Curator’s latest spotlight on the lustrous Amalfi Coast, it’s no surprise I have an affinity for the beautiful and dramatic. Thus, breathtaking cliff-side hotels — with their cinematic panoramas, crashing waves and balmy seaside air — suit me perfectly. My newest favorite, recently selected by Travel + Leisure for the magazine’s covetable “It List,” is Secret Bay, located in Dominica, that underrated gem of the West Indies. With its unspoilt nature, undiscovered black-sand beaches and otherworldly sea-cliff caves, Dominica’s landscape is unlike any other in the Caribbean — which makes Secret Bay, with its chic, eco-friendly luxury villas and exquisite locally grown cuisine, the best option for a holistic holiday.
Perched on a stunning cliff top in Dominica’s northwest coast, Secret Bay was thoughtfully designed by acclaimed architect Fruto Vivas to complement its pristine natural surroundings, which include two azure swimming beaches, Tibay and Secret, and rainforest-covered mountains. I love the cozy, two-floor Mapou Bungalow, which stands on a hillside surrounded by lush trees, overlooking the Cario River… very Swiss Family Robinson. Evoking a feeling of the outdoors coming in, it features floor-to-ceiling glass windows and a refreshing outdoor shower for prime peeks into the tropical rainforest. The fully-equipped open kitchens make cooking on vacation a pleasure — as does delivery of the day’s freshest produce from the Roseau farmers market.
