If you’re on the hunt for an early holiday gift, or simply a chic addition to your coffee table, look no further than Anne Menke’s new photo book See the World Beautiful. I picked one up for my office last week — and it’s quite the conversation starter. You can even have your copy signed by Menke herself tomorrow, October 17, at the Clic Gallery reception in Soho.
Menke, who’s endlessly inspiring to me as a fellow traveler, has circled the world on assignment for the best publications, from Vogue to Condé Nast Traveler. Along the way, she discovered that off-the-beaten-path destinations are the sources of many looks we see on today’s catwalks. Her book builds on this idea, with Menke training her lens on the beauty found in indigenous cultures.
The gorgeous hardcover showcases over 100 vivid photographs of amazing cultural self-expression in the ethnic populations of Latin America, Europe, Asia and North America. My personal favorite is of three women in white — the vibrant colors and elegant drapery render an impression more stunning than all the fashion glossies combined. Menke’s tastemaker friends also add perspective — the book includes insightful essays from the likes of Tommy Hilfiger and Julia Chaplin.
A wonderful reminder that even something as vast as our world always — and especially — merits a closer look.
