A Bite Above

What comes to mind when you think of the American classic club sandwich? Day-old cold cuts, dry toast and a quick squeeze of dressing? Think again, because I uncovered a few absolutely delicious variations that give this traditional on-the-go sandwich quite the facelift.

No talk of club sandwiches would be complete without mention of New York culinary legend, Chef Geoffrey Zakarian's delectably-classic Dagwood Turkey Club at The Lambs Club. For the conservative sandwich eater among us, Geoffrey's ode to modern American cuisine is framed between two slices of perfectly-toasted bread, providing a home for juicy, house-roasted turkey, fresh avocado, crispy bacon, and a heaping of sprouts.

The J&G Steakhouse at W Washington D.C. offers a fresh take on the classic club with chef de cuisine Philippe Reininger. The Chicken Club Sandwich encompasses three slices of freshly baked and toasted sourdough layered with herb-marinated chicken paillard, Nueske’s bacon, beefsteak tomatoes, Bibb lettuce, sliced avocado, mayonnaise and topped with a fried egg. This mouthful of a sandwich isn’t available for just passerby, only hotel guests can order this from the room service menu. So treat yourself to a suite, order up some room service, slip into a delightfully soft robe and throw your resolutions out the window — for one night only, of course. Make sure to pair it with a glass of Château Margaux.

Naturally, health-conscious LA is serving up a lighter version of a classic club, this time with a seafood twist. Wolfgang Puck’s legendary-flagship restaurant Spago in Beverly Hills, serves a sinfully delicious Lobster Club Sandwich prepared with grilled lobster on walnut bread with tarragon aioli, baby arugula and smoked bacon. I like to slide on my Gucci sunnies and savor the sandwich on Spago’s gorgeous new patio.

Bar 228 at Le Meurice, a warm and cozy bar nestled in Paris’ ultra-chic 18th century palace hotel, boasts not one, not two, but five club sandwiches for the discerning palate. Choose from traditional, vegetarian, smoked salmon, blue lobster, and shrimp, avocado and citrus fruits club sandwiches. Rejoice and marvel at new Chef Alain Ducasse’s delicately-crafted masterpieces – I always do.

Who says the club sandwich can’t be glamorous…especially if it’s in the hands of these fabulous chefs.
